Paint Correction vs Car Detailing: Which Do You Need?
Paint correction and car detailing solve different problems. Paint correction is a machine polishing process that levels the clear coat to remove swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and haze from your paint. Car detailing is a deep cleaning and protection service for the interior and exterior that keeps a healthy vehicle looking its best. If your paint has defects that do not wash away, you need paint correction. If your paint is in good shape and the car needs a thorough clean and fresh protection, a detail is the right choice.
At Portland Pro Detail, our
detailing packages start at $399 for cars, and our
paint correction packages start at $650 for cars. Here is how to tell which one your vehicle needs.
Paint Correction vs Car Detailing: The Core Difference
Many drivers expect a full detail to erase swirl marks and scratches, but a detail does not remove defects in the clear coat. Put simply, detailing preserves what you have, while paint correction restores what has been damaged.
| Aspect | Paint Correction | Car Detailing |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Remove paint defects | Clean and protect inside and out |
| What it fixes | Swirl marks, holograms, scratches, oxidation, haze | Dirt, grime, bonded contaminants, interior stains |
| Interior cleaning | Basic interior detail included at our shop | Full interior cleaning |
| Protection | Paint sealant included, upgradable to ceramic coating | Wax, 4 to 6 month sealant, or 1-year ceramic-infused sealant |
| Turnaround at our shop | 1 to 3 days | 1 to 2 days |
| Starting price (cars) | $650 | $399 |
| How often | Only when defects return | Regularly, every few months |
When Paint Correction Makes Sense
Choose paint correction when your paint shows swirl marks from improper washing, holograms left by a past detailer, scratches that have not broken through the paint, oxidation, or a dull, hazy finish. It is also the first step before a ceramic coating, because a coating locks in the paint’s current condition.
When Car Detailing Is the Better Choice
If your paint is healthy and you mainly want a clean, fresh, protected car, a detail is enough. Detailing also covers the interior, from vacuuming and air purging to cleaning and conditioning leather seats, dashboards, door panels, and consoles. Regular details help keep everyday contamination from building up into defects that need correction later.
What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction physically levels the clear coat to remove defects rather than hiding them with wax or fillers. Most swirls and scratches are small divots in the clear coat. Carefully cutting down the surrounding surface evens it out so light reflects cleanly again. Here is how our process works:
1. Prep wash and decontamination: We wash the vehicle and use a clay bar to remove bonded contamination, revealing exactly what needs attention.
2. Inspection: We examine the paint under a bright LED detailer’s light, which shows defects that normal lighting hides.
3. Cutting: Compound and abrasive pads level the clear coat around each defect.
4. Polishing: Polishing removes the haze left by cutting and restores gloss and clarity.
5. Protection: Every correction finishes with a short-term paint sealant, which you can upgrade to a ceramic coating.
We offer three correction levels. Level 1 is a 1-step polish aiming for 50%+ defect removal, designed for new or well-kept vehicles, starting at $650 for cars. Level 2 adds a 2-step compound and polish with minor spot sanding, aiming for 75%+ defect removal, starting at $1,200. Level 3 adds 3,000 grit wet sanding in a 3-step process, aiming for 90%+ defect removal on paint with years of wear, starting at $3,000.
Paint correction does have limits. It cannot fix peeling clear coat or scratches that have gone through the paint into the primer or metal. Because each correction removes a small amount of clear coat, it should be done only when needed, not on a routine schedule.
What Is Car Detailing?
Car detailing is a thorough cleaning and protection service that goes well beyond a car wash, reaching wheel wells, door jambs, glass, and interior surfaces. Our detailing packages include:
• Level 1 Detail: A 1-day deep clean with a hand wash, wax for up to 3 months of protection, and a full interior refresh, starting at $399 for cars.
• Level 2 Detail: Adds clay decontamination, a gloss enhancement polish, and a 4 to 6 month paint sealant, starting at $699 for cars.
• Level 3 Detail: Upgrades to a 1-year high-gloss ceramic-infused paint sealant with a 2-day turnaround, starting at $849 for cars.
• Standard Interior: A dedicated interior detail starting at $350 for cars, with ozone odor treatment available as an add-on.
The gloss enhancement polish in our Level 2 and Level 3 Details brightens the finish, but it is not correction. Wax or sealant can temporarily mask very fine marks, and those marks return as the product wears off.
Key Differences in Scope, Tools, and Results
The biggest difference is what each service does to your paint. Detailing cleans and protects the surface. Paint correction changes the surface itself by removing a thin layer of clear coat to eliminate defects.
Scope and Tools
Detailing relies on pH-balanced shampoos, clay bars, quality microfiber towels, vacuums, brushes, interior cleaners, and protective wax or sealant. Paint correction uses machine polishers, cutting compounds, polishes, and abrasive pads, and higher levels add wet sanding. It takes more skill, because removing too much clear coat can permanently damage the paint.
A detail leaves your car clean and protected for months. Paint correction restores depth and clarity that last as long as the paint is washed safely and protected.
Choosing the Right Service for Your Vehicle
Start by inspecting your clean paint in direct sunlight, where swirls, holograms, and hazy spots show up best. If you see fine circular scratches or a dull finish that does not improve after a wash, paint correction is likely the answer. If the paint looks clear and glossy, a detail is all you need.
Your goals matter as well. Preparing to sell? Corrected paint makes a strong first impression on buyers. Keeping the car for years? Correction followed by a ceramic coating gives the longest-lasting result. Simply keeping a healthy finish fresh? Regular detailing, with more frequent visits through the wet Portland winter, is the most cost-effective approach. Our guide on how often to detail your car in Portland covers timing in more depth.
Combining Both Services
Paint correction and detailing work best together. Correction creates a defect-free base, and detailing keeps it that way.
Every paint correction package at our shop already includes a prep wash, paint decontamination, a basic interior detail, and a paint sealant. For longer protection, you can upgrade to one of our ceramic coating packages, rated for up to 3, 5, 7, or 10 years when properly maintained. Our Executive Ceramic Coating Package combines multi-step paint correction, 3,000 grit wet sanding, and a dual layer of Fireball Dok Do.
Keep in mind that neither correction nor ceramic coating protects against rock chips. If your commute puts your front end at risk,
paint protection film is the right addition.
Why Hire a Professional?
Paint correction is not a good first DIY project. With the wrong pad, compound, or technique, it is easy to add swirls, create holograms, or thin the clear coat. A trained detailer knows how much correction your paint needs and when to stop.
Not every car needs correction, and a good shop will tell you when a detail is enough. We believe an educated customer makes better decisions, so we explain what we see and why.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is paint correction and what does it involve?
Paint correction is a machine polishing process that removes swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and haze by leveling the clear coat. It involves a prep wash, clay decontamination, inspection under bright lighting, cutting with compound, polishing, and a protective sealant or ceramic coating.
What are the benefits of paint correction compared to regular car detailing?
Detailing cleans and protects your paint, but it cannot remove defects. Paint correction actually removes swirls, scratches, and oxidation, restoring depth, clarity, and reflection. It also creates the right base for a ceramic coating.
How can I determine if my vehicle needs paint correction or just standard detailing?
Inspect your clean car in direct sunlight. Fine circular scratches, holograms, or a hazy finish mean you need paint correction. If the paint looks clear and glossy, a standard detail is enough.
How does car detailing differ from paint correction in terms of process and results?
Detailing uses washing, claying, light polishing, and wax or sealant to clean and protect. Paint correction uses compounds, machine polishers, and sometimes wet sanding to remove defects.
What factors influence the cost and time required for paint correction versus car detailing?
Vehicle size, paint condition, and service level all matter. At our shop, detailing starts at $399 for cars with a 1 to 2 day turnaround, while paint correction starts at $650 for cars and takes 1 to 3 days depending on the level.
Does a full detail remove swirl marks and scratches?
No. Wax or sealant can make very fine marks less noticeable for a while, but they return as the product wears off. Removing swirls and scratches permanently requires paint correction.
How often should I get paint correction?
Only when defects return. Each correction removes a small amount of clear coat, so it is not a routine service. Safe washing, regular detailing, and a ceramic coating help the results last much longer.
Can paint correction fix every scratch?
No. Paint correction removes swirl marks and scratches that have not gone through the paint. It cannot repair peeling clear coat or scratches that reach the primer or bare metal.
Do your paint correction packages include interior cleaning?
Yes. Every Portland Pro Detail paint correction package includes a prep wash, paint decontamination, and a basic interior detail at no extra charge.
